Commercial and Residential Metal Buildings

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Metal buildings are not confined to a single type of consumer in the construction industry. Applications of metal buildings in the commercial sector include corporate offices, sports complexes, strip malls, supermarkets, freight terminals, distribution facilities, car dealerships, and aircraft hangars.

The residential sector is not far behind. The demand for residential applications is steadily rising because homeowners have realized the many benefits that metal buildings provide such as fast and easy erection, reduced construction cost, and exceptional durability – characteristics that are unmatched by traditional modes of construction.

Because they are pre-engineered and pre-fabricated, metal buildings can be designed for any configuration and size. Building components are manufactured at the factories and arrive at the site pre-drilled, pre-punched, and pre-welded.

Metal building systems come with erection drawings and easy-to-read instructions so some owners do the erection by themselves. Others opt to hire professional building erectors who are mostly recommended by the building suppliers.

After choosing your preferred accessories, decide on the type of roofing, interior and exterior walls. While your metal building is being manufactured at the factory, prepare the site. Metal buildings need foundations where columns are anchored. Most of these structures have concrete foundations.

The two previous posts talked about the initial stages of a metal building project, which showed you guidelines on how to arrive at the final design and cost of the structure. Just like any venture, no matter how hard you prepare, some problems may sometimes crop up.

One of these is the issue that your metal building may not be able to withstand additional load. Any future enhancements or extensions for your metal building must be incorporated in the original design for lesser expense and hassle on your part.

The Unbelievable Speed of Steel Building Construction

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

This site has been bragging about how prefabricated steel buildings can be constructed much faster and easier than buildings made of other conventional materials. If you’re still not sold with this idea, then the following example will obliterate all your doubts.

Last June 2010, something unimaginable in the construction industry happened in Changsa, China. A 15-story structure, the Ark Hotel, was built in a record time of 6 days! This was made possible through the use of prefabricated columns and modules, using modern construction techniques. If the owners took the conventional approach, the construction would have lasted at least 3 months.

Prior to construction, the hotel already had its foundation so the total construction time involved only the erection of the structure plus the finishing. The construction crew took just 46 hours and 38 minutes to build the main structural components and another 90 hours to complete the enclosure.

The use of prefabricated materials means that an off-site crew of workers built the sections and their on-site counterparts just assembled them to form the structure. Prefabricated modules are basically, steel buildings that are easily relocatable and may be re-sited several times without losing their structural integrity. In the case of the Ark Hotel, the modules were transported to the site by flat bed trailers.

These are some other highlights of the project:

1. The Ark Hotel is level 9 earthquake-resistant.
2. The Ark Hotel is soundproof and thermally insulated.
3. The project used 6 times less construction materials when compared with other conventional methods of construction.
4. The building is 5 times more energy efficient than structures made of other materials.
5. Only 1% of the total weight of the building was considered waste material (mainly package materials).

Combining these environmentally friendly elements makes the Ark Hotel a sustainable building. Despite the hectic and frantic pace of construction, no workers were injured.

Daily construction schedules lasted only until 10 p.m. Despite the frantic pace of construction,

Insulated Metal Panels for Cold Storage Steel Buildings

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Modern pre-engineered steel buildings can accommodate just about any kind of purpose. More and more business owners are turning to steel for their construction needs. The growing number of steel building applications include aircraft hangars, barns, offices, auto shops, insurance agencies, strip malls, warehouses, storage facilities, etc.

The use of pre-engineered steel buildings is the preferred mode of construction of cold storage facilities. These structures are used primarily for refrigeration and freezing of products such as fresh produce, seafood, manufactured food, flowers, biochemical materials, and others.

Maintaining a controlled interior environment is the primary concern in the cold storage business. Steel buildings used as cold storage are installed with insulated metal panels in the roof and walls. Insulated metal panels (IMPs) not only have exceptional thermal performance, they also come in various widths, lengths, gauges, and finishes.

Insulated metal panels are known to have the highest insulating value per inch over all other wall insulating products in the market today. This is due to their ability to provide uniform insulation because of the shape and thickness of the insulating material (usually polyurethane), which are consistently maintained between the metal panels.

The use of insulated metal panels offers a lot of savings. Since they are lightweight, they require lower foundations, lighter framing, and fast and easy installation, resulting in a significant reduction in construction costs.

IMPs are durable, have a longer lifespan and lower maintenance requirements than other insulating products. They can even be installed in any kind of weather. Modern IMPs are coated to protect them from the elements, providing you with decades of use without the need of repainting.

Insulated metal panels for steel buildings are available in a wide range of colors, textures, and finishes. These products are also popular in other steel building applications including manufacturing plants, hospitals, office buildings, hotels, airports, arenas, and many more.

Cool Roofs for Steel Buildings

Friday, August 27th, 2010

We know for a fact that dark colors absorb heat while light colors reflect heat and sunlight. That’s why people who live in countries with tropical climates usually wear light-colored clothing to help keep themselves cool. This is also true for steel buildings. Your steel building will be hotter if you have a dark-colored roof.

Cool roofs are mostly used in commercial and industrial steel buildings application. What are cool roofs? A cool roof is a roof consisting of materials that has the ability to reflect the visible, infrared, and ultraviolet wavelengths of the sun, reducing heat transfer to the steel building. At the same time, it has the ability to radiate absorbed solar energy. These characteristics are better known as solar reflectance and thermal emittance. Most cool roofs for steel buildings are white or light-colored.

It has been proven that cool roofs can reduce the roof surface temperature by up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, thus lessening the heat transferred into the steel building below. This translates to reduce energy costs, maintain comfortable interiors, lessen maintenance costs, enhance roof’s durability, and reduce urban heat island effect.

Some benefits of cool roofs for steel buildings are:

· Reduce steel building heat-gain
· Create savings by reducing the need for summertime air conditioning
· Increase the roof’s life expectancy as well as the steel building’s cooling equipment
· Increase the thermal efficiency of the roof insulation
· Reduce the demand for electricity by as much as 10% on hot summer days
· Reduce air pollution and greenhouse emissions resulting from the use of cooling equipments
· Provide energy savings even on sunny days when the weather is not necessarily hot

For steel buildings, metal roofing products in dark colors, even black, that are coated with “cool roof” pigments may not be as reflective as those in whites or light colors, but they can still provide energy savings over other paints.

BUSINESS AND COMMERCIAL PRE-ENGINEERED STEEL BUILDINGS

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Pre-fabricated and pre-engineered steel building systems have become popular choices for business and commercial applications. This is mainly due to their durability and the state of the art engineering methods employed by metal building suppliers. Almost any conceivable design for steel buildings can now be engineered and produced by today’s steel manufacturing plants.

When steel building systems are delivered, they are packaged as kits, already pre-punched, pre-drilled, and pre-welded, ready for construction. An all steel structure is flexible and can put up as clear span, requiring no support columns. This characteristic is important for applications that require a lot of indoor space.

Basically, there are three categories of steel buildings for commercial and business use.

The first choice is the steel-framed system. Only the structural frame is fabricated using high-grade steel. The building’s exterior can be finished with other construction materials such as brick, stone, or stucco. This type of approach is most often seen in small office buildings, insurance agencies, and houses.

A steel pole building system is the next option. This configuration utilizes steel for the building’s poles and trusses, where the roof and walls are attached. Also known as pole barns, these metal structures are often used for farming and ranching applications.

The last category is the steel arch structure system. This is the easiest to erect amongst all systems. The metal structure is made up of steel panels and is often the choice for agricultural and fabrication applications. The steel panels are formed in the contour of an arch and serve not only as the building’s roof but the walls, as well.

Today’s business market is turning to steel as the choice of construction material because steel buildings are sturdy, durable, long lasting, environment friendly, low maintenance, inexpensive, and offers no surprises during construction. So, whichever steel building style is preferred, STEEL is still, the best choice.
